Flower Travellin' Band - Satori Part 1

Flower Travellin’ Band really surprised me. With a name like that, I was not expecting to be listening to a Japanese proto-metal record. The band’s guitar work is all about droning distortion, and the singer shouts more than sings, a lot like Ozzy Osbourne. Their first full-length album was all covers, apparently featuring the first ever Black Sabbath cover song. They also did a take on King Crimson’s 21st Century Schizoid Man, and this 1971 record, Satori, sounds like a healthy mix of those two bands’ early work.

In 1973 they were going to be the opening act for the Rolling Stones’ Japanese tour, but Mick Jagger’s visa was rejected so all of the concerts were cancelled. So sad.

The Rolling Stones - Sing This All Together

It’d be pretty lame to make it through wizard week without posting a song off of Their Satanic Majesties Request. So I thought I’d get Mick Jagger and his wizard hat out of the way early. I got to ogle over this Rolling Stones record a month or two ago at the Turntable. Their copy even had the original holographic image on it!

The Rolling Stones - 2000 Man

I posted this album’s inner sleeve yesterday, so I thought that I might as well follow through with a song off of the record. Enjoy some Stones!

Long John Baldry - Let's Burn Down The Cornfield

I’m surprised that I haven’t posted anything from this album since we started up Jotcamp.

Long John Baldry’s 1971 album was put together by a supergroup that puts all other supergroups to shame. It features Elton John on piano, Ronnie Wood on guitar, Maggie Bell as a guest vocalist, and Rod Stewart as a producer. I could write an essay on how awesome this album is, but this is Tumblr, so I won’t.

Fun fact: Baldry did the voice acting for Dr. Robotnik in the ’90s Sonic the Hedgehog cartoon.
