My brother picked this record up for me for Xmas. I’m so glad I finally own this gem.
Chilliwack was the band that formed out of the remains of the Canadian psychedelic group, The Collectors. They made the weird choice of releasing two self-titled albums at the start of their run, which makes tracking their music down a little confusing. This one, their 1970 debut, is their best record; after it they spiral off into pretty standard Canadian rock more in line with BTO than their original, light psychedelia.
I felt obliged to upload a song from this band after I referenced them in my last post. I bought this record on Tuesday because it’s one of my all time favourite albums.
The Collectors were a Canadian psychedelic band active during the 1960s. They released two albums before their vocalist split and they rebranded themselves as Chilliwack. This particular LP was actually written as the score to a George Ryga play called Grass and Wild Strawberries, and the liner notes seem to quote parts of the play rather than the songs’ lyrics. Here’s what accompanies this song:
Allan and Susan live in their home by the sea. One Morning the sun is up before them. The scent of earth and water hangs on blackberry shrubs and salal ferns outside their window. She wishes this was the first day of all things. There have been other mornings, other places for the two of them.
