I wish I could go back in time so I could go to a Renaissance concert, hold up a sign asking Annie Haslam to marry me, and be heart broken when she simply ignores said sign and carries on signing so beautifully. One can dream.
Renaissance is a 70s progressive rock group with a serious classical bent. Lots of prog bands claim to have classical influences, but if you listen to this song you’ll understand how Renaissance took a real stab at classical-rock fusion.
No, this isn’t Song of Scheherazade, the 24+ minute song that took up the second side of this LP. This is Ocean Gypsy, a still long but more digestible piece with wonderful vocals and tastefully arranged progressive rock.

Though they lasted into the eighties, they preferred actual string, horn, and woodwind sections to synthesisers, giving their music an epic sound and distinguishing their music from contemporaries like King Crimson or Genesis. Renaissance was actually a spin-off from The Yardbirds, Jim McCarty (the drummer) being the band’s principal member. This album, A Song For All Seasons, is up on my wall because its cover is just so damn pretty.
