Fields - A Friend of Mine

Fields was the almost-supergroup started by Graham Field when he left Rare Bird in order to continue pursuing heavy progressive rock while the rest of that band wanted to become an jazzier rock outfit. In 1971 Field enlisted drummer Andy McCulloch, who’d played for King Crimson and would later play for Greenslade, and Alan Barry, a talented singer and bassist, and the trio released this album before Field called it quits in the music scene.

Rare Bird - Baby Listen

Got to love being a lazy blogger and quoting yourself:

Rare Bird was a progressive rock band from the 60s that gained a bit of fame due to its two keyboardists gimmick. With two musicians on organ duty, this record buoys some awesome keys solos over thick backing riffs.

Except these are lies! By their third record, Rare Bird had added guitars into the mix, and to pretty awesome effect. If you don’t like 70s progressive rock because of how gimmicky it comes off sometimes, let these guys try to prove to you there was more to this music than a shtick.

Rare Bird - Bird On A Wing

I was kind of a dick to Rare Bird in my last post about them, but they’ve really grown on me. Every band should have two keyboard players like they do. Three maybe. Guitar duelling is fun to listen to, but keyboard duelling might just top that.

Rare Bird - God of War

Rare Bird was a progressive rock band from the 60s that gained a bit of fame due to its two keyboardists gimmick. With two musicians on organ duty, this record buoys some awesome keys solos over thick backing riffs. The music isn’t as busy as ELP’s, so I’m not really sure they actually needed more than one pianist. But do what you have to in order to get to good music, right?
