Pond - Moreno's Blend
Here’s my week-late contribution to blues day. Another song from the wonderful up & coming Australian sister-band of Tame Impala, Pond. Much like Zenn, I think I prefer this album to ‘Innerspeaker’. They remind me of what MGMT could have sounded like if their inspirations lied more in the classic/hard-rock genre, and that’s coming from someone who really enjoys MGMT. This song in particular however is really the only acoustic track on the album. It’s stripped down, raw and beautiful. The lazy tempo moves along just right, reminding me of The Rolling Stone’s “I Got the Blues” from “Sticky Fingers”. Just as the vocals drown out in comes a spacey laid back jam with some wonderful slide guitar, sounding like a lost “Atom Heart Mother” outtake. One of my favourites of the year, check it.
Pond - Elegant Design
I’ve been checking out Pond, the spin-off of Tame Impala, lately and I think I may like this effort better than Tame Impala. It feels a little less electronic, and seems to be more focused on the guitar riff end of modern psychedelic rock, but they still cram in some spacey ballads. I think the album’s name, though, is what excited me the most about listening to it. It’s so classy.
