Lucifer's Friend - Summerdream

For some reason I’ve never posted from Lucifer’s Friend’s 1972 record, a great and driving progressive rock album that preceded their jazz horns focus, playing more in the vein of Uriah Heep. Makes sense since John Lawton, this band’s singer, sang for them during the late 70s.This album saw the piano displace some of the heavy riffing guitar that was central to their debut, but they still retain a bit of their proto-metal edge.

Lucifer's Friend - In The Time of Job When Mammon Was A Yippie

Happy Record Store Day! I celebrated by picking up an original copy of Lucifer’s Friend’s self-titled debut. These Germans are probably my favourite of the country’s hard rock acts. Their later releases became more oriented toward jazz-rock, like a lot of German and Eastern European bands’ material became in the late 70s, but this first album was all about heavy, distorted riffing. This is the album to listen to if you’re interested in the pioneers of heavy metal.

Lucifer's Friend - Ride In The Sky

The Germans had their fair share of proto-metal bands too. Lucifer’s Friend is pretty much my favourite band ever, and their self-titled debut is perfection. This song is a good example of early palm-muting riffs.

I’ve posted a song from these guys before, off of their second album, and on that cover you can see them leathered up to the point that they’d fit in with modern day black metal groups. For any of my posts where I’ve posted from an artist before, the hyper-link attached to the artist’s name will refer to the band’s page on this tumblr.

Toad - Keep On Movin'

Toad’s final effort, Dreams, traded out some of their trademark heaviness for jazzy guitar riffs and boogie beats. It’s the same type of change Lucifer’s Friend made between their first and second albums. That’s to say I’m a big fan. While Toad’s music was always fast paced, jazzy hard rock just always feels more lively. It’s too bad they completely fell off the wagon in the cover art department…

Lucifer's Friend - Spanish Galleon

I’ve been wanting to post this song for months, and now that I have hosting, I can!

Lucifer’s Friend was a 1970s German hard rock and progressive rock band who often incorporated elements of jazz and pop music.

Despite the band’s German origin and progressive rock stylings, they are not usually classified as krautrock, which had a more electronically oriented sound.
