Fields - A Friend of Mine

Fields was the almost-supergroup started by Graham Field when he left Rare Bird in order to continue pursuing heavy progressive rock while the rest of that band wanted to become an jazzier rock outfit. In 1971 Field enlisted drummer Andy McCulloch, who’d played for King Crimson and would later play for Greenslade, and Alan Barry, a talented singer and bassist, and the trio released this album before Field called it quits in the music scene.

Greenslade - Time To Dream

Greenslade scored Roger Dean to do the cover for their debut and for this 1973 record, Bedside Manner Are Extra, and he whipped up this 5-armed wizard creature. I’m pretty sure he’s a wizard and not an alien based on his pet cat in the background. This is the album’s third track, Time To Dream, the point where the LP swings into some energetic material.

Greenslade - Pilgrims Progress

Continuing through Greenslade’s discography. Their second album adds a mellotron to the mix which for some reason people say makes the band sound “symphonic,” but I’m reasonably sure those same people have never listened to a symphony.

Greenslade - An English Western

Based on my few run-throughs of this album while I studied for my Roman history final, I think Greenslade’s going to be welcome in my regular music rotation.

After the demise of Colosseum in ‘71, keyboardist Dave Greenslade founded his own band, Greenslade, which featured Tony Reeves (bass), Dave Lawson (keyboards, clarinet, flute) and, fresh out of King Crimson, Andrew McCulloch (drums).
