HAPPY CANADIAN THANKSGIVING! I’m going to take this opportunity to rep some Canadian artists today that are under-represented on this blog.
First up, a long time favourite, Chilliwack! Originally this band played with Native American themes in their music, but further into the 70s they moved into a more standard rock formula that garnered moderate commercial success in Canada at the outset of the 80s. The band, well really their front-man Bill Henderson, continues to tour even now. This 1974 record, Riding High, didn’t contain any of their hits, but aptly exemplifies the transition they made from psychedelic to straight-up rock. If you’re interested in Canadian music at all, Chilliwack is essential territory to cover.
My brother picked this record up for me for Xmas. I’m so glad I finally own this gem.
Chilliwack was the band that formed out of the remains of the Canadian psychedelic group, The Collectors. They made the weird choice of releasing two self-titled albums at the start of their run, which makes tracking their music down a little confusing. This one, their 1970 debut, is their best record; after it they spiral off into pretty standard Canadian rock more in line with BTO than their original, light psychedelia.
