All of Captain Beyond’s albums would have worked for my wizard theme, but their self-titled debut is the best record ever produced in the history of rock, so I’ll take any and every opportunity to post a song from it. This is Raging River of Fear, one of the album’s heavier numbers.
Captain Beyond’s singer, Rod Evans, was the Deep Purple vocalist for their first three (and best) albums. Their guitarist, Larry Rheinhardt, and bassist, Lee Dorman, were once members of Iron Butterfly. And their drummer, Bobby Caldwell, had been playing in Johnny Winter’s band up until Captain Beyond.
So this is absolutely great music. Do yourself a favour and give it a listen!
Captain Beyond’s 1973 record has some pretty strange album art. My room-mate bought a reissue and I like to play it in our record player so I can look at the cover. This album, in my opinion, saw the band incorporate into their music a lot more of their folk and Canterbury influences, resulting in a softer set of songs than their previous effort.

I just realized that I’ve never posted a Captain Beyond song to this blog, so here’s a song off the best progressive rock album ever recorded.
I wasn’t going to describe the band at all because they were such a large part of my life and feel famous to me, but clearly that’s not the case at all. And their drummer, Bobby Caldwell, had been playing in Johnny Winter’s band up until Captain Beyond. So this record is the best. Period.
