Flower Travellin' Band - Black Sabbath

I never seem to post songs in the right order. Here’s the cover of Black Sabbath that I mentioned yesterday, done by the Flower Travellin’ Band on their 1970 debut. Apparently it was the very first cover done of Black Sabbath’s work. The band all posing nude for the cover stirred up quite a bit of controversy at the time.

Flower Travellin' Band - Satori Part 1

Flower Travellin’ Band really surprised me. With a name like that, I was not expecting to be listening to a Japanese proto-metal record. The band’s guitar work is all about droning distortion, and the singer shouts more than sings, a lot like Ozzy Osbourne. Their first full-length album was all covers, apparently featuring the first ever Black Sabbath cover song. They also did a take on King Crimson’s 21st Century Schizoid Man, and this 1971 record, Satori, sounds like a healthy mix of those two bands’ early work.

In 1973 they were going to be the opening act for the Rolling Stones’ Japanese tour, but Mick Jagger’s visa was rejected so all of the concerts were cancelled. So sad.

Black Sabbath - After Forever

Now that I’ve had my little rant about 80s guitar tone, here’s a song from the masters of cool guitar effects, Black Sabbath’s After Forever.

Indian Summer - Emotions Of Man

Indian Summer was an early 70s progressive rock group from the UK. Apparently this record was put on hold while their manager, Jim Simpson, helmed Black Sabbath’s debut which then ate up most of his company’s advertising funds. That’s a pretty sad band history.

Black Sabbath - Planet Caravan

While I’m thinking about Sabbath, I might as well add some more to Tumblr.

Necromandus - Nightjar

When people talk about the origins of heavy metal, they usually beeline for Black Sabbath. They should actually go to Necromandus. Tony Iommi would probably back me up since he discovered this band, stole them away from the Vertigo record label, and produced (and played on!) this heavy as hell album. The 1972 record, Orexis of Death, has metal music written all over it: palm-muted guitar crunch, fast-paced riffs and solos, and cornily dark song names like “A Black Solitude” and “Still Born Beauty”. Just look at that album art. They’re like Metallica’s grand-pappy.

Black Sabbath - Sleeping Village

I should probably post a lot more Black Sabbath to Tumblr. I rarely see it around.

Black Sabbath - St. Vitus Dance

This was my ring-tone for years, but now I can’t get my phone to play any mp3 as its ring-tone and it breaks my heart!

Zior - Love's Desire

Zior’s self-titled debut album is just as good as their follow-up, Every Inch A Man. It’s a little less heavy, and little more folk inspired. This pair of records remind me quite a bit of Spooky Tooth’s first and second outings which were, of course, awesome.

Fun fact: this album’s art is done by Marcus Keef, the same photographer responsible for Black Sabbath’s debut album’s cover.
