Donald Byrd might be the best trumpet players I’ve ever heard, and in the 70s he released a series of jazz fusion albums that I’ve fallen in love with. This one, Places and Spaces, visited funk territory to stunning effect. He penned some hits while in a band called the Blackbyrds in the mid-to-late-70s, and I think he should have used his full name as his stage name: Donaldson Toussaint L’Ouverture Byrd II.
