Van Dyke Parks’ first solo album has made for some amazing reading music. I read Alice Oswald’s Dart to this album yesterday. Parks was a 60s psychedelic pop artist and composer that has had a multi-faceted and active career, but never an amount of commercial success commensurate with his critical reception. He was embroiled into the Beach Boy’s recording career, but he was basically too drug-oriented for most of the band, and later moved onto projects for Disney like arranging The Bare Necessities for ‘The Jungle Book’ animated movie. Based on the layered sound of this album, he’s an artist whose discography I am excited to further explore.
