Link Wray started his music career off releasing heavy blues and rockabilly instrumentals in the late 50s, but he often retired only to come back into slightly different musical pursuits. This self-titled record was released by him in 1971, and here he’d recruited a band to play a “primitive” blues style, or rather a confluence of American folk, blues, and country along the same lines as Bobby Charles. On this song, for example, part of the rhythm is a shaker filled with pebbles. Although this period of career isn’t really what he’s most fondly remembered for (most old rockers cite his 50s instrumentals as seminal), it’s what I’ve been devouring lately.
